Is Free Guy a Lego Movie rip off? – Free Guy Review (2021)

Free Guy is the latest film in Ryan Reynolds acting career and seems to be a hit with the mainstream audience, but it begs the question is it too similar to The Lego Movie.

The main premise of the movie revolves around a non-playable video game character who starts to discover that he is not a real person but is in fact just a bunch of 0s and 1s.

The first resemblance to The Lego Movie is the protagonist of the movie, Guy, a regular non-special person who wants more in his life and finds it in mysterious circumstances. This may seem familiar to most viewers as we have already seen this on the big screen with the character of Emmett. Within the first few minutes of the movie, we are presented with almost the exact same gags as in The Lego Movie to the point it seems like a live-action adaptation.

It becomes quite worrying at the beginning, as if you are like me, you had high hopes for the film and seeing it being unoriginal it subverts from what is expected.

However, luckily the movie veers away from that direction quite quickly and we get a fresh story, fresh characters, and a movie which mimics The Lego Movie’s charm and recreates it in an inventive way.

You should see this movie in cinemas when you get the chance as this is the first movie in the pandemic where the crowd seemed engaged, the cinema screem was full and the movie going experience was at its peak.
